Description

If you aren’t paying for the product… you are the product. Tech companies collect data on users and then sell this data for profit. The success of big tech is defined by how many users they can draw in and how well they can then surveil these users. This course will look at the ethics of the market that is big tech data collection. We will learn how this market functions, how to evaluate market ethics, and finally come to an understanding of surveillance capitalism’s ethical status. Through philosophical readings, presentations, and our own data collection exercise we will come to understand just what is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.

Intended Audience:

LSA Honors students in their first year at the University of Michigan

Class Format:

Class meets in the Honors Lounge located in the Honors Program office, 1330 Mason Hall.
