Description

What’s Next? Vaccines, Long COVID, and Health Care Reform

The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged communities, highlighted inequities, and transformed every aspect of our lives. Additionally, long COVID (also known as long haulers syndrome or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, i.e., PASC) emerged as a new condition with a wide range of symptoms, and it affects about a third of COVID survivors. COVID vaccines provide an effective means to prevent community outbreaks and reduce their severity, but only if they are widely received. In this course, we will employ lessons from history, sociology, and public health to explore the intersection of long COVID and vaccine uptake, with a particular focus on the experiences of marginalized communities. Along the way, we will address several questions: How does culture shape our understanding of illness? Why do some people get vaccinated and others not? What can we do to improve our health care systems and better prepare ourselves for the next pandemic?

Intended Audience:

LSA Honors students in their first year at the University of Michigan

Class Format:

Class meets in the Honors Lounge located in the Honors Program office, 1330 Mason Hall.
