Description

This 1-credit course is designed to help international and multilingual students practice English academic and professional writing in a supportive environment, with a focus on editing strategies and stylistic choices. This course runs on a discussion format, in which you explore the rhetorical effectiveness of stylistic elements commonly found in American academic and professional writing. To achieve this goal, you will participate in an online core grammar program, practice fundamental editing strategies, read exemplary essays, and discuss their stylistic features. Additionally, you will identify and practice styles of writing in different contexts, such as writing in science and business. Assignments include core grammar exercises, weekly Canvas discussion forums, two essay editing exercises, and two stylistic reflections.

 

Course objectives:

  • Practice core grammatical principles in English academic writing: verbs, sentences, pronouns, possessives, precision, and punctuation.
  • Develop self-editing strategies in key areas: actions, characters, cohesion, coherence, emphasis, motivation, concision, and shape.
  • Increase knowledge about editing and style in disciplinary contexts.
  • Identify stylistic differences and apply appropriate styles to writing in different disciplines and contexts. 

Course Requirements:

  • Regular attendance and participation in class discussions. 
  • Core grammar exercises.
  • Two essay editing exercises.
  • Two short stylistic reflection essays.
  • One collaborative final presentation on editing and style.

Intended Audience:

International and multilingual undergraduate students.

 

Class Format:

This class runs in a seminar and workshop format.

Note: This course open to UNDERGRADUATES only. Meets 10/24/2022-12/9/2022. As per Sweetland policy, students cannot add a mini course after the second class meeting. Students hoping to add Writing 229 after the term starts must seek permission from the instructor.
