Recent Visitors to the Helen Zell Writers' Program
We sponsor a dazzling series of over 20 poetry and fiction readings each year (see our Zell Visiting Writers Series calendar). These writers not only offer public readings but also meet with students for substantive pedagogical encounters: in the classroom, in special workshops, or in tutorials. We have also launched an annual series of week-long residencies by distinguished writers: Derek Walcott and Michael Ondaatje in 1998-99; Seamus Heaney, Richard Ford, and Maxine Hong Kingston in 1999-2000; Athol Fugard and Russell Banks in 2000-2001; Grace Paley and Robert Hass in 2001-2002; and Philip Levine and Nicholson Baker in 2002-2003; John Edgar Wideman and Frank Bidart in 2003-2004; Paul Muldoon in 2004; Jonathan Franzen and Robert Pinsky in 2005-2006; Jeffrey Eugenides and Carolyn Forche in 2006-2007; Steven Millhauser and Lynne McMahon in 2007-2008; Deborah Eisenberg and Reginald Gibbons in 2008-2009; Allan Gurganus and Carol Ann Duffy in 2009-2010; Yusef Komunyakaa and Jonathan Lethem in 2010-2011; Jennifer Egan and Naomi Shihab Nye in 2011-2012; David Mitchell and Heather McHugh in 2012-2013.
