Who We Are & What We Do

We are your LSA general academic advisors.  We come from varied backgrounds and life experiences.  We have taught in college and high school, been to graduate school, worked in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, volunteered in our local communities, studied and lived abroad, and collaborated with colleagues all across campus.  We help you plan your courses, talk about your chosen paths, think about alternatives, refer you to resources, and support you in happy or difficult times.  We’ll meet you at orientation and say goodbye at graduation.  We are also the auditors, and we certify you for graduation.  And we are the Academic Standards Board; we assist students in academic difficulty, and act on exceptions to college policy.

Your Advisor's Role in the Advising Partnership: +

  • Be accessible to you through individual advising appointments, walk-in advising, Advising Center events and programs, and email
  • Listen to your concerns and respect your individual values and choices
  • Provide accurate, timely, and useful information about the curriculum, resources, opportunities, requirements, policies, and procedures
  • Help you make connections among your experiences, both within and beyond the curriculum
  • Help you develop strategies that will enable you to be successful academically
  • Help you develop academic plansthat are consistent with your interests, abilities, goals, and values
  • Help you make decisions but not make decisions for you  
  • Advocate on behalf of student concerns within the College of LSA


Your Role in the Advising Partnership: +

  • Keep in contact with your advisor by scheduling one-on-one advising appointments, using walk-in advising, or via e-mail
  • View your advising discussions as an on-going conversation that will help you identify your options and align them with interests and abilities
  • Come to advising meetings prepared with ideas and questions
  • Consider possible academic plans so you can discuss, develop, and focus those plans with your academic advisor
  • Become familiar with UM policies, requirements, procedures, and resources
  • Initiate and sustain contact with faculty and other mentors on campus to increase your knowledge, discover or create opportunities, and build your confidence
  • Reflect on the connections between your curricular and co-curricular experiences
  • Learn from your experiences, and be open to changing your direction based on evolving interests, strengths, and goals
  • Take responsibility for your decisions
