Choosing A Concentration

Choosing a Concentration (Exploring Your Academic Interests)

Many students entering a liberal arts college are not sure of their academic direction or future career. As an LSA student, you are not expected to declare your concentration (major) until the second semester of your sophomore year or very early in your junior year. That gives you ample time to sample a number of courses in preparation for declaration. Take a range of classes that will give you a broad sense of what LSA has to offer and notice what most attracts you. Probably the best advice we can give you in selecting a concentration is to choose one based on your interests and talents, since all concentrations provide an excellent foundation for the professional world. General advisors are happy to talk with you about your evolving interests, and discuss concentrations that may be a good fit. They'll offer suggestions, and raise helpful questions to guide you in your choice. Meet with Concentration advisors, too, as early as you want; they will talk with you about their concentration, answer your questions, and help you figure out if the concentration is an academic direction that excites you. Remember that this is a process, something that happens as you take courses, engage in co-curricular activities, and simply live your life. Work towards making a choice, but be patient with yourself: good decisions take time and thoughtful consideration.
