Instructional Equipment Funding Requests

Proposals may be submitted to the department for funding to support instructional equipment by anyone involved in teaching.

The Department requests funding from LSA for instructional equipment purchases on a yearly basis as part of our annual budget process. Requests are due in early Fall for the following year’s budget. If you have an instructional equipment request, please send an email to the department administrator so that your request can be included in the annual departmental budget request.

Please include the course number (or numbers) involved when you make your request, if the support is for specific classes. Proposals could also be made for instructional equipment that would be kept in one of our classrooms to support many classes. These funds are allocated for use to support the instructional program, rather than to support specific faculty or students.

Please send your proposal to the department key administrator via email.

The definition of "equipment" in this instance could include things such as:

maps
casts and models
specialty furniture
classroom a/v or computing equipment (on a limited basis – we are usually referred to Media Services for regular a/v equipment)
If a faculty member’s request is approved by the Department, but the faculty member does not spend the allocation, the funds will be reallocated and the faculty member would need to reapply the following year. There are no standing allocations; requests must be made each year.

Other resources for funding for instructional related equipment, slides, personnel, etc. include:

  • "Faculty Grants for Innovations in Teaching with Technology" at http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsait/lsaitc/fpg/index.html. LS&A has three funding levels available from this program: up to $3,000; up to $15,000; over $15,000.

  • The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) has many opportunitieslisted here: http://www.crlt.umich.edu/faculty/facgrants.html. Several of our faculty have been recipients of funding from these sources; they are a wonderful way of improving our instructional equipment infrastructure for undergraduate education!

    * All Departmental policies and procedures are subject to possible change as University and LSA policies change.
