In the most general socio-cultural anthropology attempts to explain similarities and differences among cultures, but that alone is insufficient for understanding specific societies, the role of history in their development, and the many forces that act upon each. The competing theories that address these and other issues impel us to carry out deeper investigations than in the past. Dimensions of social difference such as race, class, and gender increasingly shape our understanding of the human condition.
