We take great pleasure in announcing that Erik Mueggler is the recipient of this year's Julian Steward Award for his book, The Paper Road: Archive and Experience in the Exploration of West China and Tibet. This recognition from the Anthropology & Environment Society (one of the subsections of the American Anthropology Association) is awarded bi-annually to the "best book published in environmental anthropology." That bi-annual timing makes for an extraordinarily large pool from which to choose and enhances the distinction.
Past awardees since the 2003 inception of this honor have included Roberto González, Paul Nadasdy, J. Terrence McCabe, Julie M. Cruikshank, Stephen Lansing (a former colleague of ours), and David Crawford.
We take special delight in this award being named after Julian Steward who himself taught in our department for a brief period, to say nothing of having been the subject of an important work by another former colleague, Marshall Sahlins.
The award will be presented at this year's AAA meetings in November.
