John Mitani is the James N. Spuhler Collegiate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Anthropology. He is a primate behavioral ecologist, who for over 30 years has studied the behavior of our closest living relatives, the apes. He has conducted field research on all five living apes, including gibbons and orangutans in Indonesia, chimpanzees in Tanzania and Uganda, gorillas in Rwanda, and bonobos in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since 1995, he has directed a long-term field study of an unusually large community of chimpanzees at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda. His current research involves studies of male chimpanzee cooperation and social behavior.
