Saul's interests concern the contemporary history of Indonesia. In particular, the ways in which history is narrated and employed in various social and political projects. In conjunction with this focus, he is interested in the cultural and political history of Islam in the archipelago. Saul's current research, under the above aegis, looks at subject formation and knowledge practices in areas as diverse as hypnotherapy, proselytization organizations and moral activism.
