Indian Religion and Philosophy
hyoungsh@umich.edu
Hyoung Seok's research interest is in the interrelationship between Hinduism and Buddhism during the second half of the first millennium. More specifically, he considers the genesis of the doxographical system of six darsanas as a scheme to present an eternal list of Indian philosophical schools. Currently, he is studying the Hindu-Buddhist debates on the scriptural authority (the Veda and the Buddhist sutras) from the seventh to ninth centuries, analyzing the historical and philosophical intricacies and the intertextuality embedded in representative works by Kumarila, Santarakita, and Jayanta.
