Professor Lopez specializes in late Indian Mahayana Buddhism and in Tibetan Buddhism. His books include A Study of Svatantrika; Elaborations on Emptiness: Uses of Heart Sutra; Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West; The Story of Buddhism; and The Madman’s Middle Way: Reflections on Reality of the Tibetan Monk Gendun Chopel. His edited volumes include Buddhist Hermeneutics; Buddhism in Practice; Religions of Tibet in Practice; Curators of the Buddha: The Study of Buddhism Under Colonialism; Buddhist Scriptures; and Critical Terms for the Study of Buddhism. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000 and appointed Distinguished University Professor in 2005.
