About Youngju Ryu

Youngju Ryu specializes in literature and culture of modern Korea, with emphases on philosophies of writing, literary practice and sociopolitical change, conceptions of community in popular cultural forms, and the history of magazines.  Her teaching interests include premodern and modern fiction, contemporary poetry, popular culture, and cultural geography, as well as literary theory, utopianism, and theories of the communal. She is currently writing a history of twentieth century Korean literature titled The Writer’s Century: Literature as Revolution in Modern Korea.
