About Mayumi Oka
Ms. Oka’s research and teaching specializations include Japanese language instruction, Japanese pedagogy, development of teaching materials, and enhancing student’s reading skills. Her recent publications include: New Development in Language Education: Oka, Mayumi, et al., editors. Tokyo: Hitsuji Shoboo, 2005; Rapid Reading Japanese (Improving Reading Skills of Intermediate and Advanced Students), 1998 Tokyo: Japan Times, (Currently in 16th printing issued March 2005); The Benefits of Including Metaphor in Japanese Language Instruction, New Development in Language Education, Tokyo: Hitsuji Shoboo, 2005; “Can the Use of Metaphors Be a Level Marker in OPI?”, the 3rd International OPI Symposium & 12th Princeton Japanese Pedagogy Forum, proceedings of the 3rd International OPI Symposium, 2004; and “Enhancing Students’ Appreciation and Comprehension of Modern Japanese Poems through Studying Japanese Metaphorical Expressions”, proceedings of 8th Princeton Japanese Pedagogy Workshop, 2000.
In 2007, Ms. Oka was elected to the board of the Association of Teachers of Japanese, the field's national association, for a 3-year term.
