About Matthew Wegehaupt

My research focuses on the gender politics of the Korean colonial period, focusing on the process by which masculinities were transformed by economic, cultural and political forces.  Instead of focusing on the process by which "ideal" masculinities were replaced by modern ones, my aim is to examine the presence of "other masculinities," in both image and practice.  The "other masculinities" of the past, seemingly lost in the present, but very alive in the archives of the colonial period, include those that placed men outside of ideal or dominant conventions, either traditional or modern - through public love with other men, in opposition to patriarchy, or in subverting the very notion of the gender order itself.
