The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures does not formally admit students to its MA degree program.
An MA may be awarded to a student who leaves the doctoral program having completed at least 24 credit hours of coursework, all selected in consultation with their mentoring committees. Besides coursework, the requirements also include a qualifying paper, usually a revised version of a seminar paper, to be submitted to the mentoring committee. This paper may be presented to the department. The students may be required to demonstrate proficiency in the Asian language relevant to their field of specialization.
Students who are interested in a terminal MA degree program should contact one of the following area studies centers:
Center for Chinese Studies
Center for Japanese Studies
Center for South Asian Studies
Center for Southeast Asian Studies
