Politeness is an important aspect of the Korean language. The following list indicates the increasing degrees of politeness.

=> "How about it?" (nonpolite)
- -(À¸)¸é ¾î¶§¿ä?
=> "How about it, please?" (polite but informal)
- -(À¸)¸é ¾î¶³±î¿ä?
=> "Would it be all right to . . . ?" (more polite)

=> "Would you mind if . . . ?" (polite and formal)

This sentence ending is a colloquial expression similar to the indirect speech forms -°í ÇØ(¿ä) and -·¡(¿ä). (See also L5, GN2)

- Àú °Ç¹° À̸§ÀÌ ¹¹´Ï?
=> What's the name of that building?
- µ¶¸³ ±â³ä°üÀ̶ó°í ±×·¡.
=> They say it's Independence Hall.
-°í ±×·¡(¿ä) is not to be confused with ±×·¡(¿ä), which has various meanings depending on the context, as shown in these examples:
- ¿äÁò ¹æÇÐÀÌ´Ï?
=> Are you on vacation now?

=> Yeah.
- ³»ÀÏ ¸ðÀÓ¿¡ ³ª¿Ã·¡¿ä?
