Sub-mm/mm spectral line surveys
Nathan Crockett is using millimeter and sub-millimeter spectral observations to study the chemical composition of molecular clouds. He is currently leading a team of over 15 people who are analyzing a 1.2 THz wide spectrum of the Orion Kleinmann-Low Nebula, one of the most chemically rich massive star forming regions in the Milky Way. This dataset, which spans a frequency range of 490-1900 GHz, was obtained using the HIFI instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This spectrum contains approximately 20,000 emission lines from over 60 molecules. His dissertation will present “full band” models for each species that will catalog the chemical inventory, yield robust abundances for each molecule, and identify those species which trace the hottest gas in closest proximity to newborn stars. Analysis techniques developed here will be directly applicable to spectral surveys obtained using other ground-based observatories such as ALMA.
