Anne Jaskot is using radio data to examine what causes intense star formation in galaxies. While researchers have previously looked in detail at individual galaxies, she is looking instead at large populations of both starbursting and non-starbursting galaxies in the hopes of identifying representative insights. She’s combining data on neutral hydrogen from the radio-based ALFALFA survey with optical information on galaxies’ star-formation properties. Because evidence suggests that the total amount of neutral hydrogen in both galaxy types is the same, Jaskot is interested in learning whether intense star formation is the result of the distribution of gas in a galaxy, galaxy structure, or mergers that provide a sudden large influx of gas.
