Galaxy evolution
Antonela Monachesi uses the stellar populations of nearby galaxies as a tool for deciphering the formation and evolution of galaxies throughout cosmic times. She is currently working on the resolved stellar halos of nearby disk galaxies, using HST data from the GHOSTS survey. She’s using old red giant branch stars to assess the properties of the faint and extended populations of galaxies, such as their age and metallicity. She uses these observations along with various simulations to compare models of galaxy evolution and to better understand the assembly and evolution of disk galaxies. Monachesi is also characterizing stellar initial mass function variations in the Andromeda Galaxy using the PHAT (Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury) survey.
