AB, Dartmouth College | Advisor: Sally Oey Radiative feedback from massive stars
Jordan Zastrow is exploring how extreme UV radiation emitted by massive stars affects their environments locally and on a galactic scale. Because it can’t be detected directly, Zastrow looks for spectral signatures that the radiation has passed through surrounding gas, leaving it ionized. Around single stars, she’s comparing her observations from Magellan to the mock HII regions generated by photoionization models. Her results highlight the importance of properly treating the stellar winds in these models. On the galactic scale, she and her advisor have used narrowband imaging to map highly ionized gas around dwarf starburst galaxies to see how ionizing radiation might escape. In one such galaxy, they found this path in the form of a narrow cone. Her finding lends credibility to the notion that massive stars in similar galaxies may have been the source of radiation that cleared the cosmic fog of gas and dust in the early universe.
