Chemical and physical processes in protoplanetary disks
Fujun Du is modeling chemical and physical processes in protoplanetary disks – the disks around young stars where planets may form. He’s particularly interested in how the physical parameters of the star and disk control the abundance and distribution of water. He’s studying this using a code written from scratch that is able to model the continuum and line radiative transfer (from UV to mm), the heating and cooling of gas and dust, and the evolution of hundreds of interrelated chemical species. One of his current plans is to test his model’s predictions of the distribution of hot and warm water with high angular resolution observations. He’s also interested in the fate of this water and the other disk material, whether they are dispersed into interstellar space or accommodated into planets.
