Spectroscopy of open star clusters and multi-object spectrograph design

Jeb Bailey is  involved in the design and construction of the Michigan Magellan Fiber System (M2FS). Once complete, Bailey will use M2FS to study the ages and chemical compositions of a few nearby open clusters and to survey the clusters for a class of exoplanets sometimes referred to as “Hot Jupiters” – gas giant planets orbiting close to their star. M2FS will give Bailey the ability to measure precision line-of-sight velocities, determined using telluric absorption features as a wavelength reference. He hopes to provide new statistical constraints on the formation and migration of planets and offer some insight into the chemical evolution of nearby open stellar clusters.
