Alejo Stark uses cosmological simulations to set constraints on modifications to general relativity that offer, tentatively, an alternative explanation to the late-time acceleration of the universe. More specifically, Stark is studying the ways in which modified gravity models, such as f(R) gravity, affect the dynamics – and thus the gravitational potential – of galaxy clusters in cosmological simulations. He hopes to be able to determine whether this modest modification to galaxy cluster gravitational potentials as predicted by f(R) gravity is detectable by both current and future observational probes.
