    Ionizing radiation from massive stars

Jessica Kellar studies the relationship between massive stars and the interstellar medium in galaxies near the Milky Way. Massive stars emit photons that ionize the surrounding gas and that heat or destroy the surrounding dust grains. She uses optical and infrared data to study how the opacity of a star-forming region to the ionizing radiation affects the total dust mass, average temperature of the dust and the distribution of hydrocarbons. Ionizing radiation from massive stars has important implications for the interstellar medium within galaxies and the epoch of cosmic reionization in the early universe.
