Simulations and modeling of early galaxy formation

Sasha Muratov studies the formation of the first stars and galaxies and their role in subsequent cosmic history. The first stars were likely very massive and exploded in extremely energetic supernovae, seeding the intergalactic medium with metals. The first galaxies were tiny and low in mass, meaning that they were susceptible to disruption by these explosions. Muratov has developed a module in ART, a cosmological hydrodynamics simulation code, to treat star formation and feedback in the regime of the primordial gas ubiquitously present at the dawn of galaxy formation. He designs, runs, and analyzes simulations aimed at uncovering the details of galactic dynamics during this important and eventful epoch.
