Analysis of starspot structure and evolution
Rachael Roettenbacher is analyzing the magnetic structure and evolution of starspots. She is observing spots caused by stifled convection (low-mass stars) and high concentrations of metals (chemically peculiar stars). Using photometry from the Kepler satellite, Roettenbacher is analyzing the changes of starspots from rotation cycle to rotation cycle on low-mass stars with short rotation periods (on the order of days). Combining ground-based photometry, high-resolution spectroscopy, and high angular resolution interferometry, she is comparing the results of light-curve inversion, Doppler, and direct imaging techniques for analysis of starspot structure and for comparison and verification of the imaging techniques. Roettenbacher hopes that this work will lead to a better understanding of starspots through improvements to stellar magnetic field theories.
