Galactic structure and dwarf galaxies
Colin Slater studies the structure and formation of the Milky Way galaxy using observations from automated survey telescopes, such as Pan-STARRS and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Data from these large-scale surveys allows him to search for evidence of dwarf galaxies that have had their stars stripped and accreted onto the Milky Way. As dwarf galaxies fall into the Milky Way, their stars are spread out over the entire length of the galaxy’s orbit, which makes these streams of stars very diffuse and thus requires telescopes to survey large portions of the sky to identify these streams. Studying the statistical properties of these accreted stars can help constrain the process by which the Milky Way was built up from smaller galaxies, and help clarify the population of dwarf galaxies that have been disrupted by the Milky Way
