Accretion onto compact objects
Rubens Reis studies the properties of accretion disks surrounding stellar-mass black hole binaries, neutron stars, and supermassive black holes in the center of active galaxies. His research makes use of the fact that most of the radiation from accreting objects is released from the innermost regions of the accretion disk. In the case of stellar mass black holes, the radiation is predominately emitted in the X-ray band, thus allowing the underlying accretion physics to be studied using high quality X-ray spectra. Reis is exploring the properties of the coronal region in a range of objects, as well as the role of the corona in state transitions and its relationship to the evolution of the geometry of the accretion flow in X-ray binaries and in jet formation from both AGN and galactic microquasars.
