    Accretion during low-mass star formation

Laura Ingleby is studying gas accretion onto young stars, a process which links the forming star and material in the inner circumstellar disk. She is analyzing the evolution of accretion and the disk during the time period relevant for planet formation. Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope and Magellan, she measures the amount of high-energy emission produced in the accretion shock at the stellar surface, indicative of the accretion rate, and compares it to tracers of circumstellar gas for sources between 1 and 10 million years in age. With this data, Ingleby is shedding light on the final phases of the disk, shortly before it is dissipated and accretion halts.
