  Chemistry of the interstellar medium

  Justin Neill studies the buildup of molecular complexity in protostellar objects, with a focus on understanding the physical and chemical conditions of star-forming regions. Many of these clouds are known to contain a wealth of prebiotic organic molecules, which inform on their surroundings through an analysis of their molecular line profiles in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength regions. Neill is using new broadband radio/far-infrared astronomical facilities — currently Herschel, but also in the near future interferometers like ALMA — to investigate the conditions of high-mass star-forming regions. These new facilities offer unprecedented bandwidth, sensitivity, and spatial resolution, and Neill seeks to develop new techniques with which to use the massive data sets from these facilities to gain insight into the physical and chemical structure of molecular clouds.
