Academic Minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
An academic minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is not open for students with a concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Biology, General Biology, Plant Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, nor to students electing an academic minor in Biology, Plant Biology, Environmental Studies or Global Studies.
The academic minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is not recommended for students interested in graduate work in the biological sciences.
Prerequisite to the academic minor. BIOLOGY (171, 172/174, and 173), or BIOLOGY (195 and 173), or BIOLOGY (162, or 163, or AP credit for BIO 162).
Academic minor program. 18 credits if the student elected BIO 162 or has AP credit for BIO 162. 15 credits* if the student elected BIO (171, 172/174 and 173) or BIO (195 + 173).
*Pending the College Curriculum Committees approval winter 2008
Take EEB and BIO courses at the 200-level or above distributed as follows:
1. Core courses in ecology, evolution and genetics. Choose two courses from the following:
(a) BIOLOGY 281, or ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY (EEB) 381 at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)
(b) BIOLOGY 390 at Ann Arbor, or at the UMBS;
(c) BIOLOGY 305.
2. Select Additional minor electives distributed as follows:
(a) One biodiversity course from the following: BIOLOGY 207, 230, 252, 288; ECOLOGY and EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY 330, 341, 355, 420, 431, 433, 440, 441, 442, 450, 453, 457, 459, 463, 470, 486, 532, and 556);
(b) One laboratory course or course including a laboratory at the 200-level or above. 3 credits of independent undergraduate research (EEB 300 or 400), taken in a single term may be used to satisfy this requirement.
(c) Select additional 200-level EEB courses or above to bring your credit hours to at least 18 or 15 credits (see above). The credits do not include the introductory biology prerequisites.
3. Note: Multiple requirements may be fulfilled by one course, e.g., EEB 451 (Biology of Mammals) meets both the biodiversity and laboratory requirement.
