CLCIV 101 (Introduction to Ancient Greece) offers a broad survey of the history, culture and literature of one of the great civilizations of the Ancient Mediterranean. The lectures consider the evolution of this culture in terms of its topography, political and societal structures, public spaces and artwork, religious belief and family relations. Throughout the course considers Ancient Greece both as a model for our own culture, and as a world very different at every level. The course begins with Homer's epic Odyssey, the lyric voices of Archaic Greece, and the fascinating historical narrator Herodotus; the second part of the course consists of a survey of some of the great works of the Greek tragic stage and a close reading of the historian Thucydides. We conclude with Plato's discussion on the nature of Love, his Symposium. There are two weekly lectures, and two 1-hour discussion sessions, that provide a forum for close reading and discussion of the course material.
