The American road – a place of escape, adventure, freedom, and self discovery – will provide the path for us to follow in our exploration of both individual and national identity in America. What does it mean to “hit the road?” Is this notion of the “open road” somehow distinctly American? What does that say about Americans? What ideas, values and experiences are cast onto stories of the road?

Engaging with a variety of novels, music, films, and personal narratives from the group, this course will examine the development of ideas regarding travel and the open road. We will focus on the ways in which the American road figures in journeys of self-discovery and how those odysseys are characterized as American.
