Wetlands are not only important ecosystems hosting a variety of endangered species and performing valuable ecological functions, they are also the subject of highly controversial environmental policy and a source inspiration for many artists and authors. This course will examine the ecological, political, and cultural significance of wetlands, bogs, swamps (dismal or not), tarns, and other damp places using a variety of materials including text from the Clean Water Act, pop culture sources like The Creature From the Black Lagoon, essays by Aldo Leopold and Henry David Thoreau, and Supreme Court decisions.
