Primary Instructor:

In this class we will look at the beginnings of Italian theater in the sixteenth century (Machiavelli, Ariosto, Aretino, Bibbiena), its relation to court society, humanism, poetry, and the plastic arts, the tradition of the Commedia dell’Arte, through to its reformation by Goldoni in the 18th century. Evaluation will be on the basis of active participation in class, two essays and a final exam.
