The aim of this course is to introduce students to the principal Greek myths. We shall also move beyond narrative to consider the different media through which classical myths were interpreted, including epic, drama, sculpture, and painting. The myths will be seen to rehearse the central religious, cultural, and political concerns of ancient Greek (and later, Roman) society. As such they will give us greater insight into the reasons for both ancient and contemporary forms of mythmaking, since thinking in mythical terms is a cultural process that continues today.
