This course provides a close reading of select plays of the three extant 5th-century Athenian tragic poets Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides both in the context of their original cultural setting and in that of their later reception. In addition to the texts of the plays we will also read a number of later adaptations, and together view a variety of performances of Greek tragedy in theater and film. The course requirements consist of regular attendance and participation, as well as bi-weekly short papers.
