This course focuses on the creation of complex, analytic, well-supported arguments on literary works. Through discussion, workshop, and other resources like the Sweetland Writing Center, we will work together to develop and consolidate one another's essays. While we will learn some writing techniques, especially argumentation by means of definition, example, and compare & contrast by reading and analyzing several model articles, we will also read and discuss a number of short stories, poems, one novel, one film, and one polemic essay — with the focus on love'so as to become familiar with different literary conventions. Regarding writing as a process, we will employ marginal notes, journals, response papers, in-class exercises, and workshops to help one another complicate ideas and negotiate controversies. We primarily aim at developing the rhetorical and stylistic skills fundamental to college-level writers.
