This writing course focuses on the creation of complex, analytic, well-supported arguments that matter in academic contexts. Students work closely with their peers and the instructor to develop their written prose. Readings cover a variety of different genres, with a primary focus on literary texts. We will spend the majority of our time working on writing insightful and compelling essays about literary texts from wide range of national and cultural contexts, many of which might differ markedly from our own. These texts may encourage us to think about how reading and writing change in different places and situations — and what fundamental elements remain unchanged. How does writing allow us to construct or cross boundaries? Can a literary text give us insight into an experience we've never had ourselves? How are we effected by the texts we read, and how does our own writing effect our readers? By approaching literature through a global perspective, we'll gain a deeper understanding of our own roles as readers and writers.
