In this class, we will travel vicariously as readers and tourists across the colorful and treacherous terrain of 20th-century Mexico. We will engage texts that are informed by travel and tourism and an American tradition of travel writing about Mexico. Course materials will include short stories, poems, novels, films, and scholarly articles. Possible authors include Langston Hughes, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, Ana Castillo, and Harriet Doerr. Possible films include 'Frida,' 'Touch of Evil,' and 'El Jardin del Eden.' This is a writing class. It focuses on the intersection between critical thinking and persuasive writing, and, using literary texts, as the point of reference, takes as its goal the development of the student's skill at writing cogent expository and argumentative prose.
