What are the frustrations facing scientists and policymakers on the issue of HIV/AIDS? Why is the HIV/AIDS such a difficult enigma to solve? In this mini-course, we will discuss the mechanistic (biological) and response (political/cultural) aspects of HIV/AIDS and look at a synthesis between the two.

The biological aspect will cover myths about HIV/AIDS, the cause and mechanism of infection, disease progression, current treatments, current and future research, and the difficulties in HIV/AIDS research. The political/cultural aspect will cover the involvement of major international agencies (such as the WHO), the kinds of policies being implemented and how they're being implemented, how culture affects HIV/AIDS policy, and the problems in policy implementation. The political/cultural aspect will also focus on particular regions of the world such as sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and the U.S.

Attendance and class participation are mandatory. There will be brief weekly reading assignments mainly consisting of past and recent articles. At the end of the mini-course the class will be asked to draft a brief policy based on the material discussed throughout the mini-course.
