This class will examine the new American “outlaw” poets — including a selection of authors regarded as the avant-garde, experimentalists, etc. — of the last fifty years. The class will survey some of the works of outsider poets such as Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Anne Waldman, Frank O’Hara, and Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), bearing in mind the cultural context from which their poems emerged. We will interpret the poems, poets, and our own readings against a background of social history, and will especially concentrate on the importance of media choice.

We will be reading poetic statements and poems mostly from Postmodern American Poetry, listening to readings from Pennsound and the Electronic Poetry Center, and watching film clips from Ron Mann’s Poetry in Motion. We will also discuss publishing outliers such as Seventies Detroit’s The Alternative Press, and new movements toward digital and guerilla poetry. Students will keep a weekly journal, which will supplement their class discussion. At the end of the term, students will either publish their own poetry in an experimental medium, or will critically analyze an outlaw poetic movement or publication of their choice.
