Primary Instructor:

This course is about the mind, the brain, and the creative process. It is for students interested in applying scientific concepts — especially from psychology and neuroscience — to the question of how we create. It is also for students interested in ways the various sciences, as well as the arts, are fundamentally creative endeavors. Finally, it is for students interested in knowing more about their own creative processes.

Course content includes the creative process of real scientists — those we can only read about such as Richard Feynman, Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud, and those, very much alive, who will visit our class. We will also consider models of creativity from cognitive, analytic and social psychology, and mental processes such as memory, dreaming, and imagination. Beneath mental process lies the brain, whose structure and function we will study in relation to creativity. And beyond mental process lie social and historical forces which come to bear on the mind and brain in ways we will discover.

As a first-year seminar, this course relies on your coming to class prepared to participate in discussion, and on the practice of writing — both formal and informal. So, besides studying new ideas on creativity and science, this course aims to enhance your ability to use expository writing to explore and realize your thoughts and feelings, and to communicate what you have discovered to others. Writing — even the kind you produce for essays and term papers — can be more or less creative, and throughout this course we will be referring back to your own process of creating and perhaps enhancing those creative abilities as well.

Selections from several books and articles will be included in our reading list for this course. Principal among the books are Nancy Andreasen, The Creating Brain; and James Adams, Conceptual Blockbusting.

Two writing manuals will be required for purchase: William Strunk and E.B. White, The Elements of Style; and Peter Elbow, Writing with Power.
