This course provides an examination of feminist film theory, which has greatly influenced contemporary film studies. The course will focus on the major developments in feminist theoretical approaches to cinema through the study of selected essays and books that address the meaning and affect that accrue around film’s representation of gender and sexuality. Theoretical paradigms emphasized in this course will include post-structuralist, psychoanalytic, post-colonial, lesbian/queer. Feature films likely to be screened include Broken Blossoms, Salome (1922), Morocco, Stella Dallas, Dance, Girl, Dance, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Uninvited, Duel in the Sun, Jeanne Dielmann, Daughters of the Dust, Bandit Queen, Beloved, Breaking the Waves, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. We will also view a number of short and experimental films that attempt to demonstrate a specifically feminist practice.
