Why do we eat what we eat … and with whom? How do we recognize what is edible and what isn’t? What are the social and political implications of choosing to eat one thing over another, or even choosing not to eat? Do we always have a choice? Food is a central component of the everyday lives of humans, necessary for sustaining nutrition, bodies, and livelihoods. Yet, food and eating practices – whether you are enjoying a home-cooked Thanksgiving feast or a Happy Meal at your local McDonald’s – are also profoundly meaningful cultural acts that communicate and reproduce values, identities, and histories. This course will explore the sociality of food and eating using ethnographies, film, as well as readings from cultural studies, popular media, and history. We will consider the ways social scientists have engaged food practices to theorize issues of gender, ethnicity, hunger, the body and political economy. By looking at the centrality of food cross culturally and across time, we will examine the networks of global relations and hierarchies in which food practices and circulations are embedded, as well as how such practices are central to the ways we construct moral relationships with the past, with our bodies, and with each other.
