This is a beginning writing class for people who love to read and want to learn to write. The goal of this course is to help you develop your fiction and poetry writing skills by honing your understanding of the craft and by sparking your imagination. The heart of our class will be our workshops, which will be discussions in which we thoughtfully and generously critique each others’ stories and poems. You will also be required to discuss work by published authors and complete writing assignments both inside and outside of class.

Revision is an important step in the writing process. Therefore, the writing you do for this class will be graded only after you’ve had a chance to make revisions. You will turn in a midterm portfolio of revised fiction and a final portfolio of revised poetry. It is my hope that you will take pride in these portfolios and moreover, that you’ll leave this class with a respect for language and the desire to continue writing.

Again, this class is a workshop. Participation is essential for a successful workshop, and attendance is mandatory. We have an extremely short amount of time in which to cover a huge amount of material, so I want to stress that you will be expected to do a lot of both reading and writing. If you don’t feel like you have a significant amount of time to devote to these activities outside of our time together in class, you might want to either take this class during the fall or winter semesters or find another class.
