An introductory course in the art of poetry, this class has the following objectives:
1. Improve the ability to read poetry with understanding and perception of the basic thematic content in poems.
2. Recognize the relationship between the forms that poems take and the devices they utilize and the content they convey;
3. Write critical explications of literary works and to communicate literary analyses with clarity and effectiveness.
4. To develop a long lasting appreciation of the art of poetry.

We will focus on understanding poetry’s various devises of shaping words and ideas (diction, syntax, images, figurative language); its musical tools (meter, rhythm, and rhyme), and then the structures of poems (traditional forms, free verse, and otherwise). Throughout our examinations of these facets of poetry we will be asking how poets use them to convey complex ideas. We will also question our approaches to poems and broaden our understanding of poems as our familiarity with poetry increases.

Made mostly of class discussions and short lectures, this is a reading and writing course. Students will be expected to read the assigned materials and to be prepared to discuss them in class. Three papers (4-7 pages) will make the bulk of the student’s grade. Students will also take two quizzes on the critical terms used in the course. Regular attendance and active class participation will also make up a sizeable portion of the course grade.
