Primary Instructor:

In this course, we will read a selection of 19th-century writings by African American women writers, along with essays by feminist critics, to historicize and analyze languages about race, gender and femininity in the United States. Many of these women writers remain unknown, despite the literary boom in African American literature. Why is this? What are these texts about? Why do they remain important? We will explore a variety of genres, including novels, short fiction, poetry and autobiography. Course requirements: weekly responses, one collaborative presentation, active participation and a final exam.
